Le réalisateur est décédé mardi d'une hémorragie cérébrale survenue à la suite d'intervention chirurgicale sur une tumeur au cou.
"Le patient anglais", en 1996, avait reçu neuf oscars, et ouvert au réalisateur anglais les portes d'Hollywood. Il y réalisa "Le talentueux Mr Ripley", et "Retour à Cold Mountain".
